Do you wake up with a tight, achy jaw? Or a dull headache across your temples, or teeth that feel tender first thing in the morning?
You're not alone. So many women clench their jaw at night without realising it, especially during perimenopause and menopause, when sleep is lighter and stress is higher. I'm 55, and for years I had no idea how much tension I was carrying in my jaw until I started paying attention to how it felt when I woke up.
The good news is that a few gentle minutes before bed can make a real difference to how your jaw feels, and to how relaxed your face looks in the morning.
Why we clench at night
Clenching is one of our body's natural responses to stress. When we feel under pressure, the jaw tightens, the shoulders lift and the breath gets shallow. During the day we sometimes notice it. At night, we don't.
Lighter, more broken sleep, which so many of us have around menopause, can make night-time clenching more likely. Over time, that constant tension can leave the jaw feeling tight and tired, travel up into the temples and down into the neck, and give the lower face a heavier, more "held" look.
What fascia has to do with it
Fascia is the thin, connective web that wraps around every muscle in your face and body. When an area is held tight for a long time, the fascia there can become less mobile, almost as if it's "stuck". I call this Fascia Glue.
The masseter, the strong chewing muscle at the side of your jaw, is where most of us hold our jaw tension. Gently releasing the fascia around it, along with the temples and neck, helps the whole area soften and let go.
My 5-minute bedtime jaw release
You can do this sitting up in bed. Warm a few drops of facial oil between your palms first, so your fingers glide without dragging the skin.
1. Settle your jaw (30 seconds)
Let your teeth come slightly apart. Rest your tongue gently on the roof of your mouth and close your lips softly. Breathe in through your nose for a count of 4, and out for a count of 6.
2. Open the neck (1 minute)
Place your flat fingers just below your ears and sweep very lightly down the sides of your neck to your collarbones. Repeat 10 times. This helps fluid drain away from the face.
3. Masseter circles (1 minute)
Find the muscle at the side of your jaw by gently clenching, then relax your teeth apart. With your fingertips, make slow, gentle circles over the muscle, moving the skin rather than sliding over it.
4. Hold and release (1 minute)
Find a tender spot in the masseter and hold it with light pressure. As you breathe out, let your jaw drop slowly open. As you breathe in, close it gently, keeping your teeth apart. Repeat 3 to 5 times on each side.
5. Temples and jaw hold (1.5 minutes)
Make slow circles at your temples, then place your palms softly over your jaw. Let your mouth fall slightly open and take 5 slow breaths, letting your jaw feel heavy and soft in your hands.
Finish by sweeping down the sides of your neck once more, and say to yourself: lips together, teeth apart, jaw soft.

A few tips for a calmer jaw
- Keep the pressure gentle. You're softening, not digging in.
- Put your phone down at least 30 minutes before bed.
- Notice your daytime habits, like clenching at your desk or in the car.
- See your dentist if you think you grind your teeth, or if you have jaw pain, clicking or locking. These gentle techniques are self-care, not a treatment.
The oil I use
I use my Alison Jane Signature Facial Release Oil for this routine. It's certified organic and was created to give your fingers just the right glide for fascia release, so you can work slowly without pulling the skin. A few drops are all you need.
